Using Proper Motivation You Can Teach Anything!

When Cerpok Sensei was very young, his father (a public school principal on Chicago's west side) told him, "There is no such thing as a good teacher, but there are great motivators. Motivate a student properly and you can teach them anything." As an adult, Cerpok Sensei applied this concept to all of his teaching endeavors and program development. Since 1989, he has developed and presented numerous school programs, including:
  • ADHD Support: Addressing focus and attention for students with ADHD.
  • Conflict Resolution: Instruction emphasizing communication, awareness, de-escalation, and alternatives to physical confrontation.
  • Situational Awareness: Concepts designed to help students recognize circumstances, assess risk, and make safer decisions.
Cerpok Sensei's high energy and humor engage students and successfully maintain their attention throughout his presentations. He has a proven ability to use storytelling to translate complex ideas into accessible learning experiences, delighting audiences from elementary to high schools.

5 Minutes to a Healthier Mind & Body
Zazen Breathing Discipline

Cerpok Sensei began his practice of meditation in the mid-1970's under the guidance of his father, while participating in group philosophy sessions with him. He was later introduced to Zazen (sitting Zen) in 1980 and this practice has remained an integral part of his life. He has written two books on the positive effect Zazen has had on himself and his students and led to the creation of the philosophy of The Study of True Understanding. In addition to his books, Cerpok Sensei has taught Zazen and lectured on its benefits for more than thirty years.

Cerpok Sensei has become so proficient in Zazen that he can teach the method in less than five minutes.
Meditation in Motion
Kokyuu no Kata

Over the course of his thirty-five years studying the martial arts, Cerpok Sensei was always looking for ways to enhance the techniques he was learning and one of his innovations was Kokyuu no Kata or "the proper form of breath." Similar to Tai-Chi, Kokyuu no Kata combines slow, gentle movements from a white tiger form of Kung Fu and seamlessly blends these movements to the breathing discipline of Zazen. While the entire form consists of more than thirty movements, the first five movements are more than enough to get started!

The practice of Kokyuu no Kata can be modified for a wide range of individual or group participants. Whether you master a single movement or more, you will find the practice rewarding.

Dealing with Transitions in Life
The Corners of the Circle

As a 40+ year student and practitioner of meditation, Cerpok Sensei was known to sometimes sit in quiet introspection for 12-15 hours at a time and slowing his breathing down to just one breath per minute. It was during this period of his life that he stumbled upon the realization of the corners of the circle, or simply stated, learning to recognize changes in life as they are happening rather than reacting after they have already occurred. Cerpok Sensei has lectured for more than 20 years on the importance of this recognition.

The concept of The Corners of the Circle was formalized in Cerpok Sensei's second book, The Mobile Monk; A Zen Tale.

How to be a More Effective Leader
*The Story of the Raw Egg

Cerpok Sensei has been a life-long entrepreneur and spent 40+ years in the martial arts as a student, teacher, and school owner. The son of a public school Principal, Cerpok Sensei learned early on that the best teachers were really just great motivators. He applied this simple concept, along with concepts he learned as a martial artist, to both his teaching and business methods. The result was a leadership style that motivated those around him to accomplish tasks that even they themselves didn't think were possible.

Cerpok Sensei is happy to share these concepts in hopes of making others more effective leaders in all aspects of life: business, teaching, and even parenting!
* The Raw Egg is a Korean folk story.

How to Get Your Guru on!
The Man vs. The Message

For more than twenty years Cerpok Sensei has lectured and taught interactive philosophy classes with two basic rules: quote concepts but not people, and avoid expressing strong opinions. Why? It is important to recognize that all teachers/gurus are on a journey of their own and while you may go along for the ride for a while, eventually your journey must be your own. A quality philosophy will stand on its own separate from the author, and your strong opinions of today will likely change over time.

With so many people today looking for answers to the big questions in life, Cerpok Sensei feels strongly that he should share his personal experience as a "Master" / "Sensei" / "Guru."

Five Steps to Reinventing Yourself
How Cancer Made My Life Better

After being diagnosed with Leukemia in 2006, Cerpok Sensei decided it was time to reinvent himself. He switched gears completely—from philosophy to sports—and began developing an entirely new team sport.

The result was Sabakiball, a patented team sport designed to be inclusive, active, and engaging for young people. What began as an idea eventually became an international program, and Sabakiball is now being played in schools and youth organizations in more than a dozen countries.

Reinvention isn’t necessarily about abandoning what you’ve done before. Sometimes it is about taking what you’ve learned, applying it in an entirely different direction, and being willing to become a beginner again.
